The best time to start decorating for Christmas is a very controversial and decisive topic. Most people fall into two main camps: before Thanksgiving decorators and after Thanksgiving decorators. While many people feel pretty strongly one way or the other, maybe you’re still a bit torn. Here are the pros and cons of decorating for Christmas before Thanksgiving to help you decide whether it’s time to bust out the tinsel or chill a little while longer.

The biggest pro of decorating for Christmas early is that you can spread out your decorating do to list and not be in such a rush that first week of December. December is a crazy month so having your Christmas decorating done in advance may help alleviate some holiday stress. You also have more time to enjoy your Christmas decor. Let’s face it, decorating is a lot of work! You want to have time to soak it all in before it’s time to start taking it down. Many people who decorate prior to Thanksgiving think of Thanksgiving and Christmas as one big “holiday season” and don’t see the need to draw hard and fast lines between the two.
On the other hand, the main reason many people avoid decorating before Thanksgiving is that they do not want Thanksgiving and Christmas to “blur” together. They are the opposite of the “holiday season” people above and feel that mixing the two holidays cheapens them both. Another reason not to decorate prior to Thanksgiving is that having your decorations up early can make them lose their “magic” by the time Christmas actually arrives. Instead of feeling special, your decorations may start to just feel like clutter, which is not fun. You don’t want to get burned out on Christmas before it’s even December!
If you still can’t decide, you can always compromise. Maybe you can get out some of your Christmas decor now but leave the tree decorating and stocking for post-Turkey Day! Overall, you really can’t go wrong. If you really can’t decide ask your kids what they prefer. Try it one way this year and if you don’t like it, there’s always next year!
