Temperatures are starting to drop, but it’s not time to give up on your lawn just yet! It’s important to take care of your lawn in the fall to help make sure your grass looks great in the spring. There is actually a lot you can do right now to get your lawn ready for winter. Here are some steps you can take now to ensure your lawn is looking its best this spring!
Rake and Mow
According to This Old House, you should rake your leaves often and thoroughly. Any patches of leaves will kill the grass underneath if let to sit throughout the winter. You should also keep mowing until the first hard frost, keeping your grass at about 2 1/2 to 3 inches in length.
Aerate and Fertilize
It’s important to loosen up the soil in your lawn at least every few years to prevent it from becoming compacted. After you’ve finished aerating, apply fertilizer so that it can get right to the roots. Fertilizer in the fall prevents roots from freezing and gives them then energy they need to make their grand re-entrance in the spring.
Fall is the perfect time to overseed your lawn. The ground is still warm and the cooler, but not freezing, weather is great for seeding. Keep in mind that the grass needs to germinate before it gets too cold so don’t wait too long!
