Summer break may look a little bit different this year for many of us, but there are still some great ways to get out and enjoy the sun and warm weather with your family and friends, all while abiding by Governor Holcomb’s plans to get the state of Indiana back on track safely during the continuation of COVID-19. The state of Indiana is currently in Stage 3 of a 5 Stage plan to ease back into a new “normal.” If you are unsure what Stage 3 entails and allows, head on over to this link on our state tourism website to learn more.
As we move forward in this current stage of the Back on Track Indiana plan, we wanted to give you a few ideas of how to still make the most of summer break and explore your town and state. This list is obviously not exhaustive, but be sure to always call in or check with individual websites to see what business and activities are open.
Here are a few ways to get out and about during Stage 3 of Governor Holcomb’s plan:
Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo
Beginning June 14th, the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo will be open to members. Just be sure to go online to their website, kidszoo.org, and fill out a time slot (per the CDC guidelines) for your family. The zoo will open to the general public as of July 4th.
Eat Local, Outside
It’s still a great time to support local business, especially restaurants! While some restaurants have already opened for dining in, take advantage of these warm days by ordering food for carry out and eating your meal picnic style in a park, or your own backyard.
Take A Dip
Good news! For those truly hot days of summer, you can still take a trip to your community pool. Many community pools have open up again for the season, with some modifications to meet requirements by the CDC for social distancing guidelines. Just be sure to double check the guidelines with the specific pool you intend to visit.
Hiking, Biking, Fishing, and Boating
In our current Stage 3, all outdoor activities including hiking, fishing, boating, birding, hunting, and bicycle riding are permitted. Just remember to consider social distancing guidelines as you are out and about.
In addition to the outdoor activities above, campgrounds throughout the state of Indiana have begun to re-open! Make sure to contact or visit the website of the specific campground you wish to visit to confirm their opening and guidelines prior to planning any trips.
As always, it is imperative that we continue to be diligent about CDC guidelines for social distancing, even as things begin to open up throughout the state of Indiana. Get outdoors, be safe, and have fun!
