How To: Layering Bedding

When we walk in to Pottery Barn, Crate&Barrel or any other home furnishing store we always see beautifully styled beds that look incredibly comfortable and inviting, but when we try to recreate this look at home, it never seems to have the same effect. How do they do it? The technique that most of these stores use is called layering. They use multiple different types of bedding to achieve this look and there are an endless amount of options to help you achieve the styled look you are going for. The pieces that are typically used when layer are: duvets, coverlets, throw blankets and pillows.

All of these pieces are important to creating the layered look you are going for. The duvet helps to add fullness and texture to the look as well as comfort when sleeping! Duvets are sold without the decorative finish and therefore can be used throughout ever change in style! If you are the kind of person who commits to a look for a longer amount of time, you can opt for a comforter with a design instead and still achieve this look! Next are coverlets and throw blankets. This is where we start to achieve the layered look. By adding a coverlet and throw to the foot of your bed it helps to break up the solid color of your duvet or the pattern of your comforter and helps to make the bed look put together and purposeful. If you opt for a patterned comforter, layer solid colored coverlets and throws that coordinate with the colors in your comforter. If you choose to stick with the duvet you can choose either solids or patterns for the rest of your bedding! The last items that you will need are pillows-and lots of them! Pillows are the pieces that truly tie together the look and make it feel complete. By layering pillows of varying sizes, colors and textures you can add depth and fullness to your bed as well as draw interest to the piece. You may be uneasy about adding patterns or textures to some of your pillows, but simply stick with colors and patterns that coordinate with the rest of your ensamble and make these pillows the smallest pillows on your bed.

Always remember that it is important for the pieces you put on your bed, as well as the pieces in the rest of your home, to coordinate and create a cohesive feel, but they do not necessarily have to match!
