Summer time is full of good reasons to get outside - sunshine, swimming, trips to the zoo or local park - but the American favorite has to be the backyard BBQ! Are you stuck in a rut while planning out your summer-time menu? Here's a few ideas to spark your imagination: 1. Choosing the Main...
It’s the season for backyard barbecues, parties or gatherings, and family fun – all of which tend to be centered around food. Do you feel like your kitchen is hard to navigate or cluttered, leaving you frustrated while prepping those delicious snacks and meals for family and friends? Here are 3 easy tips to help you get your kitchen under control and enjoy a summer full of delicious, stress-free cooking.
1. Keep the Counter Cleared: Often times the kitchen counter can become the catch-all for bookbags, car keys, mail and more since it’s typically the first place people head to when they arrive at home. To help keep things in their proper places, try labeling designated baskets or bins for the things that typically end up on your counter-top. Visiting your local hobby or craft store will show you that there are plenty of customizable options from wooden or wire crates to cute baskets with chalk-board labels that can be changed as needed. Try reserving counter-top space for smaller items like mail and keys, while finding another location – like a mud-room – for larger items.
2. Organization is Key: Instead of fumbling around in cabinets and drawers while in the middle of food prep, take some time to consolidate your kitchen utensils, dishes, and other items and group together like items. Try keeping your spatulas, ladles, and serving spoons in a jar on the counter-top or in the same drawer near the stove since this is likely where you’ll be using many of them. In addition, keeping your bowls and plates in adjacent cupboards can help keep you sane in last-minute table-setting. For food items, try labelling shelves in your pantry and for things like sugar, flour, coffee, and tea, purchase jars with labels that can be modified as needed.
3. Keep Only What You Use: When it comes to appliances, extra cabinet and counter space in your kitchen can quickly dwindle if you are not choosy about which items to keep and which to sell or give away. That bulky waffle maker that you pull out once or twice a year? Maybe it’s time to nix it to free up some extra storage space for appliances that you use more consistently and readily. Reserve counter space for appliances that you use most frequently while storing the appliances you use the least in cabinests. After sorting out which appliances you don’t really need or use, think about donating them to your local Goodwill or Salvation Army or to an organization or family that may use them more than you do.
With these tips and tricks, you can cut down on the amount of time you spend in the kitchen and leave more time to enjoy good food, conversation, and sunshine while hosting your next backyard barbeque or family gathering!
