Homebuilding Is Booming, But Is It Enough?

REALTOR® Magazine discussed in a recent online article the increase in new home builds and how even with the building boom, there are still not enough new homes on the market to meet buyer demand. While at the start of September housing starts were at a 1.42-million-unit production level, National Association of REALTORS® chief economist, Lawrence Yun, states that, “the annualized number of permits, 1.55 million homes, will better meet housing demand.”
Despite low inventory, September showed the highest pace for single-family starts since June 2007. According to Chuck Fowke, chairman of the NAHB, “The housing market remains a bright spot in the U.S. economy, and that is reflected in the positive housing starts report. Builder confidence is at an all-time high as buyer traffic is strong-another sign that housing is helping to lift the economy.”
Based on the current trend, new-home construction is likely to remain elevated over the coming months, “supported by low interest rates, a suburban shift in demand, and demographic tailwinds.”
