Many plants will have dead growth that needs to be pruned away before new shoots can sprout. Your garden may look sparse after pruning back your plants, but it will grow back quicker than you think!
Edging your beds is an important step that many people skip before laying mulch. Once you’ve cleared away debris, use a shovel to dig a trench between your garden bed and any grassy areas or sidewalks. This will give your garden beds clean lines and prevent mulch from overflowing into unwanted areas.
Before you put down mulch, you may want to treat your soil with fertilizer or some type of weed killer. There are lots of options on the market, including more natural or organic choices.
The last step in prepping your beds is to lay new mulch. The icing on the cake, a new layer of mulch will make your garden beds look fresh and clean. Don’t be tempted to skimp, you want your new layer of mulch to completely cover all areas of your garden bed.
