Back to school time! Can you believe it’s here already? Most kids are heading back to school in the next couple of weeks and some have already started! While back to school time is an exciting time for many families, it also brings along with it more hectic schedules and potential stress. Here are a few organizational ideas you can implement in your home to make school days run a little more smoothly.

Backpack Storage

Nothing can clutter your entryway quicker than kids getting home from school. Backpacks, shoes and lunchboxes are immediately scattered everywhere making you feel overwhelmed and out of control the second you walk in the door. Yikes! Combat backpack clutter by creating a specific space for each child’s school gear. This includes a place to hang their backpack as well as some sort of basket or bin to store shoes and other stuff.

Homework Station

There are a lot of variations of homework stations that can help your kids (and family) get organized. Some people like to incorporate a homework station into an existing family “command center” that includes a family calendar, weekly menu, shopping lists, etc. This type of organizational outpost is usually located in a kitchen or entryway. Another variation is to create a dedicated homework station in a child’s room or a home office. You could even create multiple mini-stations (one for each child) right in your backpack storage area. A few things you may want to include in your station are after school checklists for each child, bins or folders for organizing work, school supplies and a weekly calendar. The possibilities are endless!

Lunch and Outfit Prep

Doing some prep can help make mornings a lot easier on you and your kids. A little goes a long way! Choosing an outfit with a child often takes way more time than you have in the morning. Try laying out the next day’s outfit as part of your bedtime routine the night before. Or better yet, plan out a whole week’s worth of outfits on Sunday night and organize them into separate bins for each day! Lunch packing is also a task that should be taken care of the night before. You already have to deal with breakfast in the morning!
