Unless you live miles out into the country with no other houses in site, you’ve probably got neighbors surrounding you. Here are 5 steps you can take toward being a great neighbor to those around you!
Rule number one: the longer you wait to introduce yourselves, the more awkward it becomes. So get out there, find a weekend time where you can pop by with a house-warming gift, and a friendly smile to greet the new neighbors! Great friendships can form just by stepping a little outside your comfort zone, and it’s bound to make the newbies feel welcomed into the neighborhood.
Talk It Out
Most conflicts between neighbors can be resolved simply with good communication. If you’re having a party, cutting down a tree, or putting a fence up, mentioning it to your neighbors will give them a bit of a heads up so they can prepare and share any of their own concerns.
While things like mowing the lawn and power washing may not be your favorite of tasks, remember that the outside of your home is what your neighbors will see all of the time. Give them a view worth appreciating by keeping up on regular outdoor tasks!
Mind Your Pets
While getting outdoors with the dog for a walk is a great way to have impromptu conversation with your neighbors, they can also become a nuisance to your neighbors if you’re not practicing proper pet etiquette. Be sure to always pick up after your pet if they’ve gone to the bathroom on your neighbor’s lawn, and also try to be mindful of their barking as well.
This one is kind of a no-brainer because, well, no one likes to hear a blast of music or a shouting match at 3 o’clock in the morning. Keep things to an appropriate level of volume, and many neighborly conflicts are sure to be avoided!
While this list isn’t exhaustive, it provides just a few friendly reminders on how to be a good neighbor to the people around you!
