I just love this time of the year! The spring rains wash away all of the dirt from the snow and salt and make the world seem so pure again. I love to see the little green shoots from the daffodils and hyacinths sprouting up from the landscaping beds.
Now is the time to prepare your landscaping beds for when the final threats of frost are gone so that you will be ready to plant additional flowers or shrubs. First, you should clean up all of the leaves and dead growth from the last growing season and pull out any weeds that have begun to emerge. Then, a freshly edged garden bed is ready for mulch. While you are at it, edging along the driveway and sidewalks adds an extra touch. (I used to call this edging “no cost home improvement”, but now I hire my son to do it so I can’t say that anymore.)
Once your garden beds and yard are ready, it is time to visit your local landscaping store for annuals to augment your perennials and fill your flower pots. My mother always says that you cannot plant these flowers in Fort Wayne, Indiana until after Mother’s Day or they will be endangered by frost, but I just can never wait!! (I usually end up covering the flowers at least once to protect them from the frost and me from hearing “I told you so!”.)
