Salvador “Sal” Soto is a Fort Wayne native and proud of it. He grew up on the south side of Fort Wayne, attended South Side H.S. and graduated from the University of Saint Francis. He has called Fort Wayne his home for most of his life. Sal has had several successful business ventures over the past 15 years, most notable being DeSoto Translation & Marketing, founded in 2000.
DeSoto Translation is a full service international business consulting, translation and marketing firm. DeSoto’s niche initially was to provide language interpreters in over 40 languages 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to the regional hospitals and court systems. The focus now is to provide language translation of documents from one language into another (Sal’s company translated the Home Buyer’s Purchase Agreement for Fort Wayne Realtors Association back in 2005.) Sal turned the company into an online business in 2008 and moved to California.
Funny fact, Sal’s Spanish is not all that great. “I’m like a restaurant owner who can’t cook very well, so I hired the best chef’s. We provided services in so many languages that I couldn’t possibly begin to learn them all and growing up here in FW I didn’t have a lot of places to practice.”
While in California Sal was hired by ATT’s International Call Service (Language Line Services based in Monterey, CA.) to provide his leadership to the newly created On-Site Medical Interpreter division for the West Coast. Although he enjoyed the weather and fast pace, Fort Wayne just couldn’t be beat when it came to quality of life, being close to friends and spending time with his family.
Sal has 3 daughters (Isabella, Olivia and Ava) ages 4, 7, 10 that keep him on his toes. Sal has 2 brothers and 3 sisters, all of whom call Fort Wayne home. His mother was a tutor for Fort Wayne Community Schools and his father recently retired from Brooks Construction. Sal attends Pathway Community Church. Sal is a member of the Fort Wayne Community Schools Scholarship Committee, board member of FW Boys and Girls Club and board member of Latinos Count, a not-for-profit entity that mentors inner-city Hispanic youth.
Sal most recently worked at Indiana Tech as the Associate Vice President of Institutional Advancement (fancy name for the guy in charge of raising money and getting the buildings named after millionaires),reporting directly to the President. He spent 3 weeks out of the month flying around the country golfing and attending dinner parties, it was a dream job but the time away from his family was just too much.
Sal is also the past President of the Fort Wayne Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, The Avant-Garde Art Gallery (Prana Yoga Art Gallery and Yoga Center) and founder & past coordinator of Fiesta Fort Wayne, the largest regional Hispanic Heritage celebration in NE Indiana.
