Home Tips: Grow Your Own Herbs at Home!

Growing your own herbs at home is a great way to save money and ensure you always have fresh herbs on hand for all of your favorite recipes. Fresh herbs taste better and are healthier too! Starting your own herb garden at home isn’t as complicated as you might think. Here are some simple steps to get you started:

What to GrowBasil, Herbs, Food, Fresh, Cooking

There are so many options, choosing which herbs to grow can be a
tough decision. Just make sure you don’t take on too many at first! Start out with 3-4 different herbs that you think you will use most often. A quick look though your favorite recipes will help you narrow down your options. Basil, cilantro and parsley are some commonly used herbs you might consider trying first. You can always add to your garden later!

Where to Plant

Now that you’ve decided which herbs you would like to grow,
you need to decide where to plant your little garden. If you want to keep your herbs close at hand when cooking, consider growing your herbs right in your kitchen.  If you have an open window sill, all you need are a few little pots or a wooden planter box and you’re good to go. A hanging herb garden is another option that doubles as beautiful kitchen wall decor!

You can also grow your herbs outdoors in your backyard or garden space. A large basket or pot would work well as patio decor, or you can build (or buy) your own raised garden bed or tiered planter.

What to EatEasy Homemade Pesto - No need for store-bought pesto anymore. This recipe is so easy with just 5 ingredients. And it takes just 5 min to make too!

Time for the fun part! The most rewarding part of growing your own herbs at home is getting to enjoy their fresh, deliciousness in all of your favorite recipes! Not sure where to start? Here are some fun recipes:

BasilEasy Homemade Pesto from Damn Delicious

CilantroCilantro Lime Shrimp with Coconut Rice from Cooking Classy

ParsleyGarlic and Parsley Butter Chicken with Gnocchi from Jo Cooks

Enjoy!

Home Tips: Spring Wreaths to Perk Up Your Front Door

Spring has officially arrived! Time to start thinking about livening up your outdoor spaces. While cleaning out that flowerbed may seem a little daunting, and you might not exactly be looking forward to hauling bags of mulch, a new front door wreath is a fun and easy way to freshen up your home for spring without a lot of effort. Here are a few spring wreath ideas that are sure to perk up your front door!

On-Trend Magnolia

Magnolia wreaths are a trendy option this year. They are so simple, beautiful and are a lovely fit for older homes. They also work well as indoor decor!

Unique Succulents

Be unique with a succulent wreath! Succulent wreaths are a great option for those looking for a more modern-style wreath. There are also many succulent wreath options made from living succulents. It’s like having a little garden right on your front door! You can even make your own!

Fresh Florals

From fashion to home decor, spring is all about the florals, and nothing says “spring is here” like a colorful, floral wreath. Soft, wispy florals, such as lavender, will add a graceful touch of color to your entrance.

Classic Boxwood

A boxwood wreath is a great option for more traditional homes. Keep it timeless with a classic boxwood wreath or add a burlap ribbon for some country-flair!

Pretty in Pink

Add a pop of color to your front door with a pretty, pink wreath! Pink is a popular color in fashion this spring and can add a fun, feminine touch to your entrance. Pink apple blossoms are a lovely option, as are pink berries.

Any of these beautiful wreath options are sure to add a pop of spring to your front door! They may even inspire you to start clearing out those flower beds too. Happy spring!

Home Tips: Christmas Eve Traditions to Start this Year!

For those of you with young ones running around your home – and with Christmas Eve just two days away! – it’s not too late for you to start your own family Christmas Eve traditions! Here are a few traditions that we have fallen in love with and we think could be the perfect dose of good fun and holiday cheer for you and your kids this season and for many to come!

Christmas Eve Pickle

This tradition is German in origin, although no one seems to be able to pinpoint exactly how it began! For this tradition, a pickle shaped ornament is placed deep inside the Christmas tree and the first child to find it on Christmas morning receives an extra little gift or prize for their efforts! No pickle ornament, no worries, choose any ornament that is set apart from the rest on your tree and save it for Christmas Eve year after year.

Pajama Elves

Christmas Eve is the perfect night to don cozy PJs, especially when the “elves” can deliver them on Christmas Eve before Santa comes during the night! Perfect for your little ones, there is even a book by Hayden Edwards called The Pajama Elves that can help you play up this tradition!

Christmas Key

It’s long been told that Santa enters each house via the chimney with presents in tow – but what if you don’t have a fireplace and chimney? Having a “magical” Christmas Key to hang outside on Christmas Eve will leave your young ones at ease knowing their house won’t be overlooked!

Track Santa

One of our favorite new traditions for families to adopt on Christmas Eve is to track Santa’s whereabouts via the NORAD Santa Tracker. With volunteers answering calls and emails to keep people informed, this will really help your kids build up some excitement for Santa’s arrival!

Family traditions can help create any holiday season special – let these ideas inspire you on how to create the perfect legacy and tradition for you and your family to carry for years to come!

Home Tips: Top 5 Tools to Have on Hand During Fall

It’s that time of year where the leaves are bursting forth in their final peak of  color, followed by their slow decent right down onto our prized lawns and landscapes. While we love the change of  scenery and pop of color that the changing leaves provide, we dread the clean-up. To help you with your own lawn clean-up this season, we’ve made a list of the top 5 tools we think every home owner should have  on hand!

Powerful Leaf Blower

There’s no better way to save time –  and your back! – than investing in a good leaf  blower. With a market full of quieter, electric models, there’s no need to fret over fuel either.

Tip Bags

Have you ever tried to stuff a garbage bag full of all those leaves you’ve just gathered, only to find that the top of the bag just won’t stay open long enough to drop  everything in? We know the frustration. That’s  why we are huge fans of  these Tip Bags  that can be found at Gardener’s Supply  Company. The bags stay upright and open, making it possible to complete the task without an extra set of hands.

Closed-Tip Rake

When you have an entire yard  to rake, that last thing you want to spend your time doing is unclogging bunches of leaves from your rake. We’ve taken a liking to True Temper’s Clog Free Rake. With it’s closed tips, leaves won’t clog between the spindles and you can save a little extra time on your yardwork.

Shrub Rake

When it comes to rakes, a Clog Free rake isn’t the only tool we recommend having on hand. This Shrub  Rake from Ames gardening company has a smaller, compact head, making it possible to fit into all those tight, hard to access places. Not to mention, it saves you from having to get on your hands a knees just to reach into those crevices and pull the leaves out.

Leaf Scoops

We’re not entirely sure who first invented these amazing hand tools, but whoever did deserves a standing ovation! Nothing speeds up the leaf removal process like Gardener’s Supply Company’s leaf scoops. As an added bonus, they only cost around $15, which means you get more bang for your buck.

We hope that as the leaves start dropping, this go-to list of garden tools keeps you sane while maintaining a gorgeous lawn and property!

Home Tips: Fireplace Facelift

It’s that time of year where the air is chilly and we can’t wait to snuggle up fireside! In honor of breaking out the firewood and matches, here are 3 of our favorite ways to give your fireplace a facelift!

  1. Whitewashing:

Whitewashing is a fairly simple process that can completely lighten up a room! With white paint that has an eggshell finish, brush paint onto the surface of the brick in small sections. Then wipe down the brick with rags to remove most of the paint. The below example shows what the brick looks like after two rounds of painting and wiping down, but feel free to do more or less to achieve your desired look. To achieve a more textured look that allows some of the original brick color to peek through, complete the process by sanding over the bricks with a medium grit sanding sponge.

2. Focal Color:

If you’re looking for a way to draw the eye to the fireplace as a focal point in a room, try adding a fresh coat of paint! On the wall or section of a wall that the fireplace is located on, choose an accent color that compliments the rest of your design scheme and draws the eye back to the fireplace. contemporary-family-room

3. The Marble Look for Less:

If you live in an older home your fireplace may be surrounded by out-of-date tiles. A quick way to update this look is to cut marble-finish adhesive paper into squares and cover the existing tile. This is a perfect way to update on a budget! Bonus points: this is a temporary fix so if you ever decide you don’t want the marble look anymore, the adhesive paper can easily be removed!

Before: 3

After: 4

We hope that these simple budget friendly tips help you get the most out of using and showcasing your fireplace this season!

Home Tips: Small Kitchen Design Tips

Over the last few years since the start of HGTV’s hit show Fixer Upper Joanna Gaines has become a household name, and for good reason. With her keen eye and taste for home design, she constantly impresses and surprises audiences with successful designs in homes of any size!

If your home and kitchen is on the smaller side, but you don’t plan on up-sizing homes any time soon, here’s a few of Joanna’s tips for maximizing the kitchen space that you already have:

  1. Play with Color:

The golden rule when it comes to color schemes in small kitchens? From the counter-top up, keep things light. Picking a lighter shade of granite or marble for the counter-top, a white backsplash like subway tile, and lighter upper cabinets (think white, cream, or very light gray) will draw the eye upward and create the illusion of a bigger kitchen.

  1. Under-Cabinet Lighting:

Typically running at about $30 per light fixture, under-cabinet lighting is one of the cheapest ways to improve your small kitchen space. The room will become larger to the eye with light casting down on both the countertop and backsplash.

  1. High Cabinetry:

In many homes, you’ll find a space between the top of the upper cabinets and the ceiling that many people will fill with pottery, vines, etc. While this may seem like a good idea in your small kitchen, taking the cabinets all the way up to the ceiling will actually draw the eye up and make the ceilings appear higher than they actually are.

  1. Nix the Island:

While on many episodes of Fixer Upper Joanna has described the island the pinnacle of kitchen design and the focal point of the room, this isn’t always the case in smaller kitchens. Rather than compromise already limited space, explore other options – like a unique hood over the stove – to give the room some added character.

Let’s be honest, we can all find something we love about Joanna Gaines and the way she designs a home. Next time you begin your small kitchen update, keep these tips of hers in mind!
